The shoe was designed in the iconic "Chicago" Air Jordan 1 color way, reimagined by pulling in inspiration from the beloved traditions of the Kentucky Derby. Laser etched and hand-dyed red on veg tanned leather is a rose pattern, meant to embody the "Garland of Roses" that the winner of the derby receives. The black hair-on calf leather was used to give the shoe a touch of "horse" or "pony" vibes. While the swooshes act as race horses themselves with the embroidered jockey sitting atop. White smooth leather was used to round out the popular color way in a clean and orderly way.
On the lateral side of the shoes, we have reimagined the wings design to resemble a mint leaf, an essential ingredient in the Mint Julep which is a staple at the Kentucky Derby. "Riding" the Nike swoosh is an embroidered jockey representing Oliver Lewis, the very first winner of the Kentucky Derby, dressed in a red and blue jockey kit to represent The V Foundation logo. The insoles have been wrapped in authentic seersucker material, meant to mimic the mens' suits worn on the day of the derby. The most creative aspect of the shoe is found in the outsole, where a custom metal "horseshoe" was made to resemble the bottom of an AJ1 outsole and then fastened to the bottom of the sole.
The "Front Runners" are packaged into a large hat box to tie in the grand hats worn by women during the event. That box been wrapped in heavy cotton canvas that resembles many different jockey silks, tying in every aspect of the derby into one, ingenious collection.
